Some designers forget to design for accessibility. They are so focused
on creating something that works well for *them* that they end up
excluding more users than they wanted to. If your GameBoy Color asked
you to select between a red and green item, what would you do if you
were red-green colorblind? Too bad for 8% of the male population. Also,
websites with advertisements must be a pain for people who use screen
readers.

But I'm not only talking about bad designers. There are malicious
designers who implement systems that are practically worse than their
predecessors but secretly take advantage of their users who are, on
average, not able to understand the technical implications. This happens
a lot now, especially in computers. There are far more benevolent
designers out there, but their effect is largely muffled by a small
group of powerful pricks.

For me, this was not a sudden realization. It was a lot to take in, but
I eventually connected the dots. I became an *activist*.

One such poor design is HTML e-mail. I could go into detail about why
HTML in email is no good for anybody, but I'll boil it down to three
points:

  * it is a security risk
  * it is a privacy risk
  * it is horrible for accessibility

So, I have decided not to tolerate any HTML e-mail in my e-inbox. Please
configure your e-mail client to send plaintext messages, for the good of
mankind.

Thank you for reading,
Troy Sankey
