A typical installfest at UCLA

Next Installfest: 2014-04-12, 12:00-17:00, Boelter Hall 4760

Installfest is an event where Linux experts help beginners install Linux and other open source software. Bring your laptop or desktop, and get paired with an Linux guru to do an installation. We will help you select a distribution, partition your hard drive, install the operating system, show you how to use it, and everything else in-between.

When and where is the next Installfest?

LUG@UCLA holds installfests each quarter on Saturday of second week, typically in Boelter Hall 4760. See our calendar for the next installfest.

What is it like?

There will be food, entertainment, and maybe some swag (promotional items).

See pictures and videos of past installfests at our media gallery.

How to prepare

  1. Backup your valuable data, if you haven't already. See our page on backups for help. Even if you don't plan on installing Linux, everybody should have backups!
  2. Skim over our list of distributions—we typically install Debian, Ubuntu, Fedora, or openSUSE.
  3. If you have a laptop, don't forget to bring your power adapter. If you have a desktop, only the tower will be necessary.
