Many new computers use AT66 and although linux has (beta) support, it isn't
available in the automated installation stuff yet (correct me if I'm wrong).
It requires a bit of thought and maybe someone else has hacked through it.  I'm
not the one to ask here, since I'd rather just stick with AT33, but I that
sounds like that might be your problem.  Same thing happened to my roomate last
night (BTW).  I just told him to switch it back to his AT33 slot (may not be
available on all motherboards though).
