1)  Is the little 4 pin cable that goes from the cdrom to the sound card
installed?
2)  Have you tried installing/running aumix to see what the mixer
settings are set?  

If you don't know what aumix is, it's a great character based mixer that
is easy to use and works GREAT!  You can run it in a terminal in X or as
an X application (xaumix).
