Yes you can do both of these, but I think I'll try to help with the cd
drive stuff since I had the same situation on my machine. First you have
to figure out which drive is now /dev/cdrom which you can do using 
 
ls -l /dev/cd*

Then you must assign your cdrom drive as /dev/cdrom, as I suspect your
burner is actually /dev/cdrom right now.  The details for this procedure
are in the archive for this list at www.linux.ucla.edu, discussion list,
and search by author using my name.  Basically you have to remove
/dev/cdrom as root, then reassign that designation to your cd drive and
not the burner.  Be careful not to make a symbolic link to a symbolic link
to a symbolic link.....
