Ok, i found the way around.  In case somebody else run into trouble.

For some reason that i ignore, LILO was configured to boot a 
multiprocessor motherboard.  When that happens, the default lilo boot (ie 
linux) will try to boot a multiprocessor mother board, but there is
another option: type linux-up at lilo prompt, and lilo boots the system
for an uni-processor motherboard.  Now, i just need to reconfigure lilo so
the default option is linux-up.
