not sure what you meant by big because 1024x768 is the display size so it
should be the same on X or MS Windows.  16 or 24 bit only changes the color
depth.

To toggle between different display resolutions you can CTRL+ALT+(plus sign)
or (minus sign).  

May be when you tried 1024x768 it did not switch to that mode at all because
you video card is not support so it just default to standard VGA mode.  I'm
not sure if your Diamond viper v770 is supported on current version of
XFree.  Check www.xfree.org for video board support.

What linux distribution are you using?
