what you gain is damage control.  some user does something that screws
up the /home partition (I know it's not supposed to happen on a properly
configured system) and it won't take out the whole machine.

Here's my layout (but it's only about 4 gigs total and it's two
different physical drives so it's a little different).
/		500 Meg
/pub		750 Meg
/usr		1.5 Gig
/usr/local	2.2 Gig

I will be converting /pub to /home (250 Meg) /var (250 Meg) and /pub
(250 Meg)
