Awesome! The first half is a very good introduction to UNIX in general, with
install, admin, etc stuff covered pretty well. The second half is an
alphabetic command reference -- with EXAMPLES! (IMHO the biggest failing of
most man pages is not including a few examples.) The index is very solid,
and the stuff on shell scripting is very nice.

I concur. This book is nicely written. I'm reading it right now. Sobel
does a good job in teaching by example and keeping his writing interesting.
This is not just a plain how-to book. However, I think that the section
about X and GUI is poorly done. That doesnt matter though, because you can
find X/GUI resources by searching the web.

I'll put my vote in too for "A Practical Guide to Linux".
--Leston Buell
Two thumbs up! An absolute must-read! To access this extensive plethora of
documentation, just type "man foo" at the Linux commandline, where foo is
the name of a command you want to learn more about.
--Dan Helfman
This is my personal favorite. I found it to be extremely newbie
friendly, and it evens talks about programming in Linux.

It seemed to me that this had a better index than "Unix in a Nutshell" and
that things were much easier to find. One thing I don't really like about
either is that you generally have to know what the name of a command is
before you can find anything.

I bought this too -- badass. Not all specific to Linux, but it all applies
and the 2nd edition is very nice.
--Joshua Barratt
Also not Linux specific, but this is my favourite general reference.
--Glenn Glazer
Good all-around reference.

Info on how TCP/IP works.

Great general networking book.

One of the best sysadmin books out there. Best I know of at least.

Terrific (but slightly advanced) OS book.
--Joshua Uziel
Good OS book... starts decently from the beginning.
--Joshua Uziel
Terrific system calls book.
--Joshua Uziel
Great for socket (and a few others) programming info.
--Joshua Uziel
I very extremely highly recommend this if you're at all interested in
object-oriented programming (OOP). The book is pretty advanced, so learn OOP
before you read it. It brings together all kinds of different concepts and
strategies of object-oriented design into one catalog of 23 design patterns.

Classic C programming text... the one I take with me.
--Joshua Uziel
Great book... when you think you've got the K&R book down, go here.
--Joshua Uziel
Terrific book for doing what the title says.
--Joshua Uziel
Great reference on the subject, written by the man...
